A project was initiated to generate embryonic callus from field-grown Balsam Fir seedlings. The goal was to determine the feasibility of this process and to expand the identification of source materials suitable for propagation.
Meristem tissue was extracted from SE seedlings after cold storage conditioning. The tissue was placed on an induction media, and after several subcultures, embryonic cells were successfully recovered. This process is ongoing and will be repeated with additional SE seedlings.
